Ashwagandha is an important medicinal plant. Botanically or scientifically Ashwagandha is known as “ Withania somnifera ”. It is made with two words “ASHWA” + “GANDHA”, ASHWA means horse and GANDHA means smells. It smells like horse, so it was named as Ashwagandha. If it is taken regularly then human body can get power like a horse. It strengthens our immune system. It is rejuvenating herbs. 

It has well identified and fully described in ancient Ayurveda medicine system, originated from India. It is used as medicine to cure many diseases. There are many benefits of Ashwagandha for human. Leaves of Ashwagandha are own shape and flowers are of yellow color. It gives red color fruits like resins or dry grapes. It is also used as food supplement. There are many chemicals of medicinal importance are present in Ashwagandha. Major group of phytochemicals are withenolides which are titrapane lactones withanolides, withaferine A, alkaloids, steroidal lactones, tropine, cuscohygrine. Till now 40 withanolides, 12 alkaloids, and numerous sitoindosides have been isolated. 



It is important herb for the purpose of food supplements. There are adaptogens in Ashwagandha. Adaptogens adjust the immunity against the changing environments.
